While celebrating Open Access Week, we are happy to release our article entitled
"Open access journals, magazines and other information sources for
scholarly literature in pharmaceutical education, research and
pharmacy practice". The article is published in "Research in Pharmaceutical Sciences, April 2008; 3(1): 1-20". The Journal Research in Pharmaceutical Sciences is an Open Access Journal available at http://journals.mui.ac.ir/rps. The full text pdf is available for free to download at http://journals.mui.ac.ir/rps/article/view/4205/1766
We hope that the article will be useful to pharmacy students, teachers, industry and pharmacists.
THE ABSTRACT OF THE ARTICLE IS AS FOLLOWS:
The open access (OA) to scholarly articles published in journals, magazines and other literature sources is extremely useful to pharmacy students, teachers, research scholars, scientists and pharmacists to update their knowledge with recent changes in their fields of Specialization. Open access (OA) to scholarly articles is provided either directly from journal homepages by the publishers or from repositories where publishers submit these articles to promote OA. Apart from these online repositories for thesis, online resources trials, sample copies of journals, free back files, author funded OA of individual articles are other important online resources for information retrieval. International organizations have also started initiatives to provide free or low cost access to online journals in developing countries. Searching internet for information requirements in specialized disciplines is becoming easier with the advancement of search engines through specialized and custom search engine facilities. Authors searched Internet with the help of various general purpose search engines, like google, yahoo, and live search, to find out URLs of websites of journals, magazines, science and technology publishers, pharmaceutical societies, and online repositories which provide open access to scholarly articles and other useful and authentic drug information in pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences disciplines. Authors visited all these websites to confirm their free accessibility and their free contents available. Thereafter these journals, magazines and other literature sources are segregated according to their specialization and provided in this article. Open access journal full text links have been provided for 235 journals and 49 magazines in disciplines of pharmaceutics, pharmacology, toxicology, physiology, clinical pharmacy, epidemiology, chemistry, pharmacognosy, microbiology, biotechnology, bioinformatics and multidisciplinary pharmaceutical sciences. Websites for online drug information resources, and repositories which provide full text thesis have also been compiled. This article reviews most OA resources with special reference to the disciplines of pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences.
October 19-23 will mark the first international Open Access Week.
Open Access Week is an opportunity to broaden awareness and understanding of Open Access to research, including access policies from all types of research funders, within the international higher education community and the general public. The now-annual event has been expanded from a single day to accommodate widespread global interest in the movement toward open, public access to scholarly research results.
Open Access Week builds on the momentum started by the student-led national day of action in 2007 and carried by the 120 campuses in 27 countries that celebrated Open Access Day in 2008. 2008 organizers SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing & Academic Resources Coalition), the PLoS (The Public Library of Science), and Students for FreeCulture welcome new key contributors for 2009: OASIS (the Open Access Scholarly Information Sourcebook); Open Access Directory (OAD); and eIFL.net (Electronic Information for Libraries), which will again spearhead events in developing and transitional countries.
There are also partner organizations that are engaging their communities in every corner of the globe and these are listed on the main page of this site (SPARC Europe, SPARC Japan, DOAJ and BIREME). If you want join them and help get the word out please contact email@example.com.
This year, the organizers will highlight a growing suite of educational resources that local hosts can use to design their own programs on Open Access, for their respective audiences and time zones. The OASIS project features the resources for researchers, administrators, librarians, students, and the public — as well as different OA awareness levels — that will be the centerpiece of the 2009 Open Access Week program.
These audience-specific resource lists will be supplemented by the growing clearinghouse of educational materials available through the Open Access Directory, which will again serve as the key index for participating campuses and organizations on five continents. Through the collaborative functionality of the two initiatives, videos, briefing papers, podcasts, slideshows, posters and other educational tools will be drawn from all over the Web to be featured during Open Access Week 2009.
The organizers will also work with registered participants to develop a variety of sample program tracks, such as “Administrators’ introduction to campus open-access policies and funds,” “OA 101,” and “Complying with the NIH public access policy” that take full advantage of available tools. Scholars, students, libraries, publishers, individuals, and campuses everywhere are invited to adapt these resources as needed and to mark Open Access Week by hosting an event, distributing literature, blogging, or wearing an Open Access t-shirt.
“After the success of last year’s Open Access Day, we’re delighted to be co-organizing the first ever Open Access Week with our fellow collaborators, again in conjunction with the anniversary of one of our flagship journals,” said Peter Jerram, CEO for the Public Library of Science. “We would ask our supporters to celebrate the fifth anniversary of PLoS Medicine by spreading the word about Open Access and getting involved in the week.”
“There’s no more certain sign of the momentum behind Open Access to research than an annual, global celebration of this scale,” added Heather Joseph, Executive Director of SPARC. “Occasions like this are the best possible way to attract attention from busy faculty members and administrators. It’s SPARC’s pleasure to be working with our partners to realize the event once again this year.”

On the 1st of May 2009, African Journals OnLine (AJOL) launched the latest version of its online service to provide access to peer-reviewed, African-published scholarly journals – www.ajol.info.
At 346 journals from 26 countries, AJOL is the world’s largest online collection of African journals, but until now, has included only tables of content, abstracts, and journal information on the website. As of the beginning of May, 60% of the 40,000 plus articles on AJOL will be available for immediate download. By the end of 2009, AJOL aims to have 100% of its growing collection fully full-text online.
The updated site and the new functionality are possible due to a close collaboration between AJOL and the Public Knowledge Project (PKP), developers of Open Journal Systems (OJS) – the open source software which powers the AJOL service. AJOL is also supported by its donor partners, INASP and the Ford Foundation.
